Unfortunately, on August 9th, an ATR-72-500 operated by Voepass Linhas Aereas crashed in a residential area near Vinhedo in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing all 61 people on board. It is believed that the aircraft entered a flat spin, which occurs when both wings of an airplane are stalled. The aircraft was operating as flight 2283 from Regional West Airport (CAC) in Cascavel to Sao Paulo (GRU). Flight data shows that the aircraft was flying at 17,000 until around 13:22 when it dropped to the ground in a matter of minutes. Severe icing was reported in the air near the crash site between 12,000 and 21,000 feet.

The aircraft involved was a 2010 built ATR-72-500 registered PS-VPB. Voepass received the aircraft in October 2022.

Despite the aircraft crashing in a residential area, local authorities have reported that no one on the ground was injured. Brazil’s Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center has launched an investigation into the accident.
